Product Questions

What are the advantages/disadvantages of one large monitor vs. multiple smaller monitors?

Advantages of multiple monitors:

  • eTakeoff is designed to make maximum use of multiple monitors. Some applications tile multiple views in a single window so they don’t work well on multiple monitors. eTakeoff uses multiple window in most cases to take advantage of multiple monitors.
  • Do you simultaneously use multiple applications that benefit from large windows? If so, maximizing them in two different monitors is easier than organizing them in a single monitor.

Advantages of a single monitor:

  • Consider how much physical space you have. Multiple monitors take up more desktop area (for bases that are far apart)
  • Does your video card support multiple monitors? If not, you’d have to purchase a video card for multiple monitor support.
  • Do you use other applications that would benefit from a large screen area but DON’T support multiple monitors?
I have a drawing loaded but the New Measurement button is grey. Why?

If you are using the free, basic version of eTakeoff, it supports the following file types for VIEWING only (no measuring capability):

  • JPEG – Joint Photographic Experts Group Interchange Format
  • PDF – Adobe Acrobat – Single and Multi-Page
  • PLN – FW Dodge Planroom format
  • PNG – Portable Network Graphics Format
  • TIFF – Tagged Image File Format – Group 3 or 4
Do I have to buy a license for each computer?

Yes. eTakeoff is licensed on a per-computer basis. The free version of eTakeoff can be placed on any computer used to review all information created with the advanced versions.

If I buy eTakeoff Advanced, can I upgrade to Premier later?

Yes. You will be charged the difference between the current price of the upgrade product and the amount you paid for your existing product.

Can I test drive eTakeoff before I buy it?

A 15 day trial (Demonstration License) is built into the program. The trial includes all Advanced and Premier functions. Usage Questions

What’s the best way to start a new measurement with a specific trace?

There are many ways to start a new measurement. These methods will automatically select a trace for the new measurement:

Double-click on a Trace in the Control Panel

This is the most popular and most powerful way to start a measurement unless you’re using the Quantity Worksheet. If you display the Trace List or Trace Tree in the control panel, you can simply double-click one of the traces to start a new measurement using that trace. show me

Double-click on a Worksheet Item in the Control Panel

If you’re using the Quantity Worksheet, you can set up worksheet items to automatically assign a trace to any measurement assigned to the item. If you display the Worksheet Assignment Tree in the Control Panel and double-click on an item with automatic trace assignment, it will start a new measurement that is assigned to the item and uses the item’s trace. show me

Press the “Area”, “Count”, “Length” or “Perimeter” Ribbon Bar Button

If you are only using the four simple Traces “Area”, “Count”, “Length” and “Perimeter”, there are buttons in the Ribbon Bar “Home” tab you can press to start a new measurement with that trace. This technique is intended primarily for new users who are just learning about measurements. As you learn eTakeoff you will quickly find that you want more specific traces than these four. If you’re NOT using these buttons, you can go to the “Look” tab of the User Preferences Window and un-check the “Show trace buttons in ribbon bar” checkbox. The next time you start eTakeoff the buttons will not be displayed. show me

Use the Trace Selection Window

The trace selection window displays a list or tree of traces for selection. You can right-click on a measurement and choose “Select Trace…” to display the Trace Selection Window. With the window displayed, you can check the box “Display this list when starting new measurements” at the bottom of the window. Then the selection window will be displayed whenever you start a new measurement. You can start a new measurement by pressing the “A” key or pressing the New Measurement button in the Ribbon Bar or Toolbar. show me

Starting ALL New Measurements with the same Trace (NOT RECOMMENDED)

A few users want to mark all measurements the same way to indicate that they are incomplete or unassigned. To do this, edit standard traces, select the initial trace you want to use and check the box “Use this trace for ALL new measurements”.

We don’t recommend this. Most users do this by accident. To undo this setting, don’t try to find the trace with the box checked. Instead, just select any trace while editing standard traces. Check the box for the trace and press OK. Then select the same trace again, uncheck the box and press OK.

Determining the Default Trace

If you start a new measurement in a way that DOESN’T automatically select a trace, the default trace will be determined by the following rules (the first matching rule is used):

  1. Use the Worksheet Assignment trace. This will happen is the following conditions are met:
    • The Worksheet Assignment Control is displayed in the Control Panel
    • Auto- Assign is checked in the Worksheet Assignment Control
    • The selected item in the Worksheet Assignment Control has “Override measurement trace on assignment” checked.
  2. A standard trace has “Use this trace for ALL new measurements” checked
  3. A trace is selected in the Trace Tree or Trace List control in the Control Panel
  4. The last trace used is used again. Any of the following actions will set the last trace used:
    • Double Click on a trace in Control Panel
    • Select a trace from the Trace Selection Window
    • Press the Area, Count, Length or Perimeter button
    • Add a trace by dropping a description on a trace in the Control Panel
I copied the help file to another computer to study it. But when I try to use it I get the message “Navigation to the webpage was canceled”. How can I fix this?

show me

Some versions of Windows block access to help files when they’re copied from another computer. Follow the steps below to unblock the file. You may need to do this running as Administrator.

  1. When you try to open the Help file, if you get the “Open File – Security Warning” window, UNCHECK the box, “Always ask before opening this file.” show me
  2. Right-click on the help file and select “Properties…” show me
  3. At the bottom of the “General” tab you should see a message that the file may be blocked.
  4. Press the “Unblock” button.
  5. Press the “Apply” button at the bottom of the window.
  6. Press the “OK” button at the bottom of the window.
Measurements are not displayed on my drawing. But in the drawing list, the drawing name is shown as though it has measurements. What causes this?

The drawing list is shown in bold if there are and measurements or annotations. To make sure all measurements and annotations are visible, do the following:

DrawingWithMarkup
  1. Zoom out so that you can see the entire drawing.
  2. Make sure all layers are visible (Watch Video)
  3. If you have Pattern Search, display the Pattern Search Toolbar and make sure the “Show/Hide Pattern Search Annotations” button is checked. (Watch Video)
  4. If you’re using the Quantity Worksheet, make sure Audit Mode is not checked.

All measurements and annotations should now be visible.

Why does my annotation disappear after I create it?

There are several reasons why this behavior may occur. Check the following properties of the annotation:

  1. Make sure the Transparency Slider is far enough to the right.
  2. Make sure the layer assigned to the annotation is turned ON.
  3. Make sure the font’s color of the annotation is visible.
  4. Make sure the fill’s color does not conflict with the font’s color of the annotation.
  5. Make sure the font size of the annotation is not too small.
AnoToolbar
Why can’t I digitize points except on a 90 or 180 degree line?

The behavior you’re describing is know as “polar mode”. (The term is from CAD.). You can turn polar mode on or off by clicking the button in the measurement toolbar.

PolarModeBtn

When adding points in polar mode, the point is forced to fall on a line that is a multiple of 90 degrees from the previous point. This is most commonly used to create horizontal or vertical lines. It can also work for lines of various angles. Select the desired angles by checking the appropriate box(es) on the Admin/User Preferences/Drawing tab. You can also disable polar mode when creating measurements with a Count data type on the Drawing tab of the User Preferences Window

How do I transfer my standards database (traces, layers, bid codes, scales and extensions) from one computer to another?

To transfer your standard database, you will need to:

  1. Select “Options/Export Standards” from the main menu.
  2. Click on the folder for Standards Database to select all standards the press the “Export” button. show me
  3. Enter a file name for your exported file & note where you saved the file.
  4. Copy the file onto the other computer.
  5. On the destination computer, start eTakeoff and select “Options/Import Standards from the main menu.
  6. Navigate to where the exported file is, select it and press the “Open” button. show me
  7. Click on the folder for Standards Database to select all standards then press the “Import” button. show me

Note: This capability is not available in the Basic Viewer.

How can I make the Trace List/Tree return to the last trace I used?

The Trace Tree/List works in one of two ways:

  • One trace is designated as the default trace. Each time the tree/list is opened, it will return to this trace.
  • If no default trace is specified, the tree/list will return to the last trace selected.

To see if there is a default trace, start a new measurement and see what trace is selected in the tree/list. (If you’re using the tree, note what branch the trace is in.) Then select “Options/Edit Standard Traces…” and double-click on the trace. If the check box “Use this trace for new measurements” is checked, this is the default trace. Uncheck this box and the trace tree/list will return to the last trace selected.

Can I “test drive” the advanced features of eTakeoff?

A 30 day trial (Demonstration License) is built into the program. The trial includes all Pro, Pro-Plus and Premier functions. Once you’re familiar with the Basic functionality, you can start your trial by selecting “Admin/Install Demonstration License…” from the main menu. Fill in the form and press the “Get License…” button. Then you can use all the features for 30 days. We recommend you schedule a one-on-one session with our sales staff to go over the advanced features.

Why can’t I print out more than one page at a time?

eTakeoff does not currently support printing more than one page at a time.

Managing Projects and Drawings

How do I transfer a project from one computer to another?

Note: This capability is not available in the Basic Viewer. To transfer existing projects, you will need to:

  1. Project Backup or Project Backup and Zip. show me
  2. Copy the entire project Folder (if Project Export was selected) or copy the Folder/Zipped file into the eTakeoff Project folder of the other computer.
  3. Restore the Project on the other computer (File/Project Restore…).

For more detailed information on the Backup / Restore processes, click on Help, eTakeoff Help, Index and search for Backup. Review topics on “Project Backup”, “Project Backup and Zip”, and “Project Restore”.

I’m trying to load plans from a folder where I downloaded a file, but eTakeoff doesn’t show a list of plans to add. Why?

The drawing files may be in a ZIP file that needs to be uncompressed or unzipped.

  1. Navigate to the folder containing your downloaded files. (If eTakeoff is your main project folder, click on your Desktop / eTakeoff Projects Folder / {designated project folder}.
  2. If the folder contains file(s) ending with “.zip”, those files will need to be “unzipped or extracted”. A ZIP file contains one or more files that have been compressed to reduce file size. Files that end with “.zip” indicate they are compressed and will need to be uncompressed in order for eTakeoff to read the information in the original form.
  3. You can usually extract the files from a zipped file just by double-clicking on it or right-clicking on a file and selecting “Extract”.
  4. If that does not work, you will need a “zip” program to “unzip” the file. There are several popular tools on the internet that you can download to unzip files.
How do I view drawings that are emailed to me or on a CD?

The drawing files must be copied into a folder on your computer or network before creating a project or opening the plans to view in eTakeoff:

  1. Create a folder on your computer for the plan files. Click the desktop shortcut “eTakeoff Project folder” to display the eTakeoff project folder then add a new folder for the project within that folder. show me
  2. Copy or extract the drawing files into the folder you created. While in an email, right-click on the attachment and select “Save as” or click on a button to download the attachments. When the browser window appears, double-click on: Desktop / eTakeoff Project Folder / {folder you created previously}.
  3. Open eTakeoff and select “File/Create New Project” from the main menu. The folder selection dialog will be displayed. Select the folder you created in step 1. show me
  4. The project properties window will appear for the new project. Make sure “Scan for drawings” is checked and press “OK” show me
  5. A tree of the drawings files will be displayed. Make sure all the drawing files you want are checked. Then press “Add”. show me
  6. eTakeoff will create the project and open the first drawing file automatically.
How do I delete a project?

Before you delete a project, think about whether or not you’ll want to restore it later. If you do, backup the project before you delete it. (In eTakeoff, select “File/ProjectBackup…” from the main menu.) Then do the following:

  1. Open the project you wish to delete. Then click the “Project Properties” button. show me
  2. Press the “Delete Project” button in the properties window. show me
  3. Press the “Delete” button again in the “Delete Project” confirmation window. Warning: DON’T check the “Delete all files and folders for this project” check box unless you’re sure of what you’re doing. Checking it will permanently delete all the drawing files. show me
What is the difference between Project Backup and Project Backup and Zip?
  • Project Backup creates a single file with project information (takeoff), but it does NOT save the drawing files.
  • Project Backup and Zip creates a single file with both the project information and the drawings.
How do I save a project, delete it and retrieve it at a later date?

Note: This capability is not available in the Basic Viewer.

  1. With the project opened in eTakeoff, save or archive it by clicking on File, Backup or Backup and Zip. (See FAQ: What is the difference between Project Backup and Project Backup and Zip? for more information.) show me
  2. Delete the project by clicking on the Project Properties button, then clicking on the Delete Project button. Next, click the Delete button again in the “Delete Project” confirmation window. WARNING: Make sure you DO NOT check the “Delete all files and folders for this project” because you will not be able to Import the project back at a later date. (See FAQ: How do I Delete a Project? for more information.)
  3. To Retrieve the project at a later date, click on File, Project Restore…, browse to the Project’s original folder and select the archived file you created in step 1.

For more detailed information on the Backup / Restore processes, Look for “Backup” in the eTakeoff documentation index.

How can I move an eTakeoff project to different folder?

Do the following:

  1. With the project opened in eTakeoff, select “File/Project Backup…” from the main menu. Enter a filename (or use the default name) but be sure to use the default folder (the project folder).
  2. Still in eTakeoff, delete the project but DON’T delete the files and folders for the project.
  3. Move all the files and subfolders in the project folder to the desired folder.
  4. In eTakeoff, select “File/Project Restore…” and select the file created in step 1 (now in a different folder). The restore process will re-create the project.
How can I send an eTakeoff project to another eTakeoff user?

eTakeoff’s Project Backup/Restore capabilities make this easy. If the user already has access to the drawing files (perhaps on a shared server as described above), you only need to export the project information:

  1. With the project opened in eTakeoff, select “File/Project Backup…” from the main menu. Select a filename and all the project information will be stored in that file.
  2. Transfer the file to the other user. Note: If the drawing files are in a project folder on a shared server, the export file will be placed there by default. No transfer is necessary (assuming the other user has access to the shared folder).
  3. Have the other user use “File/Project Restore…” from the eTakeoff main menu. They then select the transferred file and the folder containing the drawing files. The restore process will re-create the project for that user.

If the other user DOESN’T have access to the drawings, you will need to transfer both the project information and the drawing files:

  1. With the project opened in eTakeoff, select “File/Project Backup and Zip…” from the main menu and select a filename.
  2. Then go through the steps to select which drawing files are to be included.
  3. The project information and the selected drawing will be zipped up into a single (potentially very large) file.
  4. Transfer the file to the other user. Note: If the file is very large, you may not be able to email it. There are services such as Send This File or Box.net that transfer large files easily.
  5. Have the other user select “File/Project Restore…” from the eTakeoff main menu. They then select the transferred file and select a destination folder. The restore process will create the project and unzip the drawing files into the folder.
Can I configure eTakeoff to store drawings on a shared server?

Yes. Simply do the following:

  1. When you install eTakeoff, use the default Database Folder on the LOCAL computer.
  2. Create a main folder on the server for eTakeoff projects. Each project will use a subfolder (or a sub-subfolder) underneath this folder. We recommend you use the name “eTakeoffProjects”.
  3. In eTakeoff, select “Admin/User Preferences…” from the main menu and select the “General” tab. show me
  4. Press the “Browse…” button for the “New Project Folder” and select the folder created in step 1.
  5. When you create an eTakeoff project, simply create or select a folder with this new project folder.

You need to install eTakeoff to have integration with iSqFt. If you’re using CINView, we recommend you install eTakeoff and begin using it for new projects. You can have both CINView and eTakeoff installed on your computer simultaneously. However, projects created under CINView won’t appear in eTakeoff and vice versa. So your old projects will appear in CINView and your new projects will appear in eTakeoff. You can move individual projects from CINView to eTakeoff by exporting them from CINView then importing them in eTakeoff. Importing and exporting are simple processes that are described in the documentation.

Dodge Data & Analytics Interface Questions

Why don’t certain features work when I view plans from a different source other than Dodge Data & Analytics?

If you are using eTakeoff in place of Dodge View, you may want to register eTakeoff as the default application for PLN files.
