Performing a rough carpentry estimate has many challenges. Not only are there endless components to takeoff such as structural wood, sheathing, joists, paneling, etc., but developing an accurate material list will make or break a job at the end of the day. For example, calculating the number of joists per size and length at the estimating stage will save on waisted lumber during the job and win your company more bids.eTakeoff Dimension gives you various tools for different types of takeoff. Using the joist extension tool, for example, you can easily measure an area, enter in the size and spacing of the joists and the program will calculate and display a series of parallel members inside the measurement. You can also move and rotate the joist layout for more accuracy. The result will give you a list of counts and lengths for the joists needed on the job. You will save time and money using Dimension’s tools for your estimating needs.
Calculate and lays out joists
Joist extensions offer special powerful features. The area to be covered is digitized. The joist spacing and joist width are entered. The length rounding is selected from a list. A pitch can be specified for sloped joists such as roofs. You can then:
- Rotate the joist orientation to any angle
- Move the starting point for the first joist
- Remove or insert individual joists
- Double up individual joists
The joist layout is visually displayed. You can also get a count of the different lengths needed and copy it to the clipboard.
Calculate framing and drywall from one measurement
A simple extension calculates the track distance, stud count and drywall sheet count from a single measurement. The wall is digitized in a plan view. The wall height, stud spacing and drywall sides are entered. The drywall sheet size is selected from a list. Track distance, stud count, drywall square feet and drywall sheet count are calculated.

“Our company purchased eTakeoff because of its ease of use and the power with which it deals with electronic plans. In addition, the add-in that is available for lumber estimating was exactly what we were looking for – a tool by a framer for a framer. This is like a new toy for me! I am having a lot of fun doing what has been drudgery at times in the past! I understand they also have a concrete & rebar estimating add-in for those of you needing that.”
